Ria UX Writing Guidelines

Ria needed content consistency. I created the guidelines below and implemented these across the Ria website and app.

Rule: Always use sentence case.

Rule: Use transfer in instead of transaction.

Rule: Use transfer in instead of transaction.

Text styling should be handle with CSS to remain consistent throughout the app.


Explained

Consistency. Translators send translations in sentence case. This also follows the Google Material Guidelines (GMG). Consistency and maintenance. With an exception for proper nouns, those are always capitalized.

Transaction language is used when describing external and 3rd-party processes.

Avoid silly language in error messages


Tone. Instead use a tone to set us as the experts per our content brand guidelines.

Avoid redundancies in content

Always use clear and concise language

GMG. Avoid tech jargon for users, using customer-friendly language instead.

Clarity. Create extra clarity for users when they are taking an

action. Also in the GMG.

Don’t use “quotes“ to distinguish CTAs, Legal docs, or other content, bold content instead.

Consistency and maintenance. Quote

styling is different by country. Bolding is easier to remain consistent.

Distinguish links using

more than just color


Accessibility. Best practice for users with color blindness.

Avoid I and we, with

exceptions for legal and

marketing language.


 GMG. Don’t use first-

person pronouns to speak for the product.


Do:  Due to industry regulations, all transfers go through a review process.


Don't: We care about your security. That's why we review all transfers.


Use em dashes in error messages to separate clauses /phrases


Grammar. Em dashes are longer (—), so they are used between phrases or clauses (groups of words). Hyphens are shorter (-), so they are only used between prefixes and words to make compound words such as self-esteem.


Do:  An error occurred while uploading your documents — try again 


Don't:  An error occurred while uploading your documents. Try again.
